Results of the study programme: acquisition of basic knowledge of fundamental and applied courses/disciplines necessary for competence of bachelors in Philology (Translation and Interpreting).

Professional knowledge and skills obtained as a result of completing the programme:

On completion of the programme students will be able to:

  • use their skills in professional activity which are formed from fundamental knowledge of different Linguistic aspects, improving their professional and language culture;
  • be aware of economic, political, social, philosophical, historical, cultural, psychological issues been able to meet professional requirements in different environment;
  • translate social and political, technical and scientific, business texts from English into Ukrainian and Russian and from Ukrainian and Russian into English;
  • interpret (being language mediator) meetings, discussions, presentations, negotiations, etc. at the conferences, international events. He should be quick-witted, smart, flexible, possessing rich background knowledge on the subject area interpreted;
  • make research and analytical linguistic activities.

Programme requirements (ECTS credits)

In accordance with the Standard on higher education set for the study programme Philology (Translation (English)) Bachelor’s degree, 240 ECTS credits are awarded in total. The curriculum incorporates: mandatory courses (206.5 ECTS credits), elective courses (25.5 ECTS credits). Course paper – 2 ECTS credits. Practical training and internship – 4.5 ECTS credits. The Final Examination comprises the Comprehensive State Examination in Theory and Practice of Translation (1.5 ECTS credits).

Educational goals of the programme

The goals of the study programme Philology (Translation (English)) Bachelor’s degree is training skilled, socially responsible translators and interpreters who possess universal linguistic and cultural competences together with translation skills and knowledge to meet the demands of the emerging national and international labour market in the globalized world.

The programme’s educational goals are designed to:

  • ensure training of bachelors in Philology taking into account requirements of the labour market, to form competence and skills by introducing innovations in education;
  • provide basic knowledge of fundamental and applied courses necessary for competence of bachelors in Philology;
  • familiarise students with effective translation tools to meet demand for high quality translation services, establish and maintain competitive advantage of the programme graduates worldwide;
  • prepare specialists for organisations and enterprises of all branches of the economy who are able to provide translation and interpreting in different environment and possess practical skills to develop the high level of competence in translating various types of texts from two foreign languages in various areas such as economics, law, natural sciences, media, computer science, or texts for the arts and social sciences as well as business texts;
  • develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to both theoretical and applied problems in translation;
  • develop the students’ powers of analysis and judgement;
  • develop graduates as social individuals who are ready to solve certain problems and tasks of communicative and social activity;
  • provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to further studies in Philology, Linguistics, Translation Studies, and other related fields or in multidisciplinary areas that involve translation;
  • develop in students, through their studies, a range of generic skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment as well as in their future career in the private or public sector.
